English Grammar Past Simple

I'll be teaching past simple today. They way you learn should be changed from complicated to practical. It means you should not get confused with the English grammar rules - instead, build your mastery by repetition. You cannot master the simple past tense in only one time of learning, but repetition is the key.

ENGLISH GRAMMAR PAST SIMPLE


I worked ...
You worked ...
We worked ...

AFFIRMATIVE FORMS

Structure: S + V2 + complement.
                  S + was/were + complement.

Using simple past to talk about past events or activities.
I went to San Francisco last week.
I visited my grandma last month.
Anna had some bread for breakfast this morning.
We watched a live concert last night.

Using simple past to talk about past conditions.
I was outside when you came home last night.
She was here with me yesterday.
The food you cooked was really delicious.
The exam was quite hard so I couldn't finish all of them.

Using simple past to talk about past professions.
Mrs. Rebecca was a teacher in the past, but she is now a bank teller.
You were still a little kid when I got married.
Michael Jackson was a great singer.


NEGATIVE FORMS

Structure: S + Did not + V1 + complement.
                   S + was/were + complement.

I did not do anything last week.
She did not go to the doctor for a check-up.
They did not know anything what I said.
We didn't do their homework so the teacher gave us a punishment.
I was not hungry so I did not have dinner last night.
We were all selfish in young ages.



INTERROGATIVE FORMS

Structure: Did + S + V1 + complement?
                   Was/Were + S + complement?

Did you call her last night?
Did he say something to you?
Was the test easy to do?
Were you at home when it was on fire?



Abbreviations:
did not - didn't
was not - wasn't
were not - weren't
